According to a statement from the White House, Obama condemned the “outrageous attacks” in his phone conversation with Harper. The president was referring to both Wednesday’s shootings on Parliament Hill and the attack on two soldiers in Quebec on Oct. 20.
Obama said it is not yet known what motivated the shootings.

Washington confirmed that a Palestinian teenager shot dead by Israeli troops was a US citizen -- the second time this week an American child has fallen victim to the ongoing conflict.
The army said that the youth killed Friday had been about to hurl a petrol bomb at Israeli motorists near the West Bank city of Ramallah.
US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the US "expresses its deepest condolences to the family of a US citizen minor who was killed by the Israeli Defense Forces".

Three-month-old Chaya Zissel Braun, the baby girl killed today in Jerusalem during a vehicular terrorist attack, was an American citizen, a US official confirmed to The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday night.
The girl was thrown from her stroller as a car swerved into the Ammunition Hill light rail station, injuring seven others.
"The United States condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s terrorist attack in Jerusalem," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in an evening statement. "We express our deepest condolences to the family of the baby, reportedly an American citizen, who was killed in this despicable attack, and extend our prayers for a full recovery to those injured. We urge all sides to maintain calm and avoid escalating tensions in the wake of this incident."

#THISisThinkingDisorder

By some estimates, 1 percent of the male population continues, long after puberty, to find themselves attracted to prepubescent children. These people are living with pedophilia, a sexual attraction to prepubescents that often constitutes a mental illness. Unfortunately, our laws are failing them and, consequently, ignoring opportunities to prevent child abuse.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines pedophilia as an intense and recurrent sexual interest in prepubescent children, and a disorder if it causes a person “marked distress or interpersonal difficulty” or if the person acts on his interests. Yet our laws ignore pedophilia until after the commission of a sexual offense, emphasizing punishment, not prevention.
A second misconception is that pedophilia is a choice. Recent research, while often limited to sex offenders — because of the stigma of pedophilia — suggests that the disorder may have neurological origins. Pedophilia could result from a failure in the brain to identify which environmental stimuli should provoke a sexual response. M.R.I.s of sex offenders with pedophilia show fewer of the neural pathways known as white matter in their brains. Men with pedophilia are three times more likely to be left-handed or ambidextrous, a finding that strongly suggests a neurological cause. Some findings also suggest that disturbances in neurodevelopment in utero or early childhood increase the risk of pedophilia. Studies have also shown that men with pedophilia have, on average, lower scores on tests of visual-spatial ability and verbal memory.

JordanKing Abdullah of Jordan, who spoke to CNN from the Royal Palace in Amman, agreed that the celebrations in the West Bank were isolated events and said "we were just as shocked as you are."
"It's a small group of people; it's no way a reflection of the Palestinian people or other peoples of the Middle East," said Abdullah, who added that Jordan shares the sorrow and grief suffered by Americans.
PalestineAs Palestinians celebrated in one West Bank town and in Lebanese refugee camps on Tuesday, their leader Yasser Arafat offered his sympathy to Americans and said the Palestinian authority was "completely shocked" by the string of attacks.
Arafat said: "We are completely shocked. It's unbelievable. We completely condemn this very dangerous attack, and I convey my condolences to the American people, to the American president and to the American administration, not only in my name but on behalf of the Palestinian people."
IsraelIsraeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said: "The fight against terrorism is an international struggle of the free world against the forces of darkness."
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak told CNN that "it's time for action and not just tough talk" to fight terror. He said that whoever supported or hosted terrorist groups should be "automatically isolated from the family of nations.''

Egypt / Tagammu"Egyptians' feelings about the incident are deeply contradictory," said Mosbah Qutb, senior member of the leftist Tagammu Party, reflecting on popular sentiments about the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington as Shaden Shehab and Fatemah Farag report. "On the one hand we are a civilised people -- a people who truly believe in peace and have great respect for human life, and to see such loss fills us with pain. On the other hand is our acute awareness that this is the United States whose policies are directly responsible for so many deaths and so much misery throughout the world, particularly, of course, in the Middle East."
Egypt / Wafd"We [the Wafd Party] like all Egyptians, strongly condemn terrorism. We condemn terrorist activities against the United States; equally, we condemn terrorism by Israelis against Palestinian civilians." Abaza took the opportunity to add that he hoped that the "horrific attack on the United States would make the world feel the pain of the Palestinian civilians who are crushed every day."
Egypt / Nasserist"What happened to America is a great tragedy that we condemn categorically. At the same time," Dawoud said, "it is a pity that civilians had to pay the price of the American administration's miscalculations." He added, "American policies have made a lot of enemies, not only in the Middle East but throughout the world -- actions like dropping the [atomic] bomb on Hiroshima or even their position in Durban. I hope they learn their lesson."
Egypt / Muslim BrotherhoodFor their part, the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood said that they were "horrified" by the attack on the US and they expressed their "condolences and sadness." And it is clear that to hold someone responsible for a crime committed by another, is not just." He added: "Enmity and hatred do not justify aggression or injustice."
Muslim Scholars:
The undersigned, leaders of Islamic movements, are horrified (ra`ahum) by the events of Tuesday 11 Sept 2001 in the United States which resulted in massive killing (qatl), destruction (tadmeer) and attack (i`tida) on innocent lives.
We express our deepest sympathies and sorrow. We condemn, in the strongest terms, the incidents (hawadith; word shared with Hebrew in 'hadasah') which are against all human and Islamic norms. "The five questions Sen. Cruz is asking are below:
  1. Was this decision a political decision driven by the White House? For instance, who was this decision made by - a career official, a political appointee, or someone else (at the FAA, State Department or White House?)
  2. If the FAA’s decision was based on airline safety, why was Israel singled out, when flights would be permitted into Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen?
  3. What was the FAA’s ‘safety’ analysis that led to prohibiting flights to Israel, while still permitting flights to Ukraine—where a commercial airline flight was just shot down with a BUK missile?
  4. What specific communications occurred between the FAA and the White House?  And the State Department?  Why were any such communications necessary, if this was purely about airline safety?
  5. Was this a safety issue, or was it using a federal regulatory agency to punish Israel to try to force them to comply with Secretary Kerry’s demand that Israel stop their military effort to take out Hamas’s rocket capacity?"

#THISisConservativeCannibalism

The super PAC, named Mississippi Conservatives to emphasize its homegrown roots, has bought three weeks of airtime on stations across the state for a commercial attacking State Senator Chris McDaniel, who is running against Mr. Cochran.
- ‘Super PAC’ Is Formed in Mississippi to Protect 6-Term Senator in G.O.P. Primary - The New York Times By JONATHAN MARTIN Posted on JAN. 30, 2014
A super PAC supporting Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran is trying to turn the tables on his tea-party-backed challenger in the GOP primary, accusing state Sen. Chris McDaniel of being (of all things) soft on public debt. But to do that, the PAC’s TV ad is twisting the facts.
Henry Barbour, a lobbyist and adviser to Mississippi Conservatives PAC, told the New York Times that the group’s backers are concerned that the Republicans could lose the seat if McDaniel beats Cochran in the primary.
Henry Barbour also told the Times that his uncle, former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, will help raise money for the group
In fact, of the 23 bills cited by the Mississippi Conservatives PAC as evidence of McDaniel’s lack of conviction, Barbour signed all 13 that went to his desk — increasing the state debt by $711.3 million. That includes one bill that McDaniel abstained from on the final vote (H.B. 1701 in 2010).
One could just as easily make the claim, using the Mississippi Conservatives’ own data, that Barbour increased the debt by more than McDaniel.
We take no position on the merits of the Common Core standards. We merely point out that the TV ad from the Barbour-backed group overstates its case by omission, not commission. Yes, McDaniel voted for Common Core funding, but it was a small amount in massive bills to fund the state’s public schools that were passed without objection. And the Common Core standards had the early support of the former governor who is reportedly raising money to help underwrite the ad that accuses McDaniel of being deficient in his opposition to the Common Core standards.
- Distortions in Mississippi GOP Primary - Factcheck.org by Eugene Kiely, with Madeleine Stevens Posted on February 12, 2014
A pro-Cochran super PAC associated with former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is already on the airwaves to define upstart conservative state Senator and challenger Chris McDaniel five months before the primary.
And even Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, who on Sunday endorsed Cochran, criticized the group on Monday.
“I’m disappointed in that – it’s just not something that’s necessary,” Bryant said on Monday, according to the Clarion-Ledger. “I would urge them to stop the Republican-on-Republican attack. I believe it was Ronald Reagan who talked about the 11th commandment – thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican.”

Justice's new probe, known as "Operation Choke Point," is asking banks to identify customers who may be breaking the law or simply doing something government officials don't like. Banks must then "choke off" those customers' access to financial services, shutting down their accounts.
If a bank doesn't shut down a questionable account when directed to do so, Justice slaps the institution with a penalty for wrongdoing that may or may not have happened. The government is compelling banks to deny service to unpopular but perfectly legal industries by threatening penalties.
Bank regulators—particularly the FDIC—have joined in the action, warning banks away from serving more than 22 categories of businesses, including "Get Rich Products," "Ammunition Sales," "Pharmaceutical Sales," "Home Based Charities," and even "As Seen on TV" businesses.

Some merchant categories that have been associated with high-risk activity include, but are not limited to:

  • Ammunition Sales
  • Coin Dealers
  • Firearms Sales
  • Fireworks Sales
  • Home-Based Charities
  • Pornography
  • Tobacco Sales

While the first icy political blasts of the Cold War were being felt among the ruins of Europe in 1946, hot lead was flying a lot closer to home. The last certifiable armed engagement between citizens and their government on American soil, the gun battle that took place on the night of Aug. 1-2, 1946, and that came to be known as the Battle of Athens, was more than a shoot-out between factions in a small Southern town. It was a violent but decisive clash of two social and political cultures, between the past and the future of rural, state, and ultimately the federal government, and a reconfirmation of the deeply ingrained ideal that Americans can assert themselves against tyranny, even when it was taking place in their own backyard.

For a year, the young men of Athens and other towns in McMinn County—a hilly, verdant patch of southeastern Tennessee—had been returning from World War II. The war had taken most of them, farm boys for the most part, more than a few miles from home for the first time. But letters had kept them apprised of news from home. And increasingly, that news was not good.

But the most direct and significant kind of federal action aiding economic growth is to make possible an increase in private consumption and investment demand -- to cut the fetters which hold back private spending. In the past, this could be done in part by the increased use of credit and monetary tools, but our balance of payments situation today places limits on our use of those tools for expansion. It could also be done by increasing federal expenditures more rapidly than necessary, but such a course would soon demoralize both the government and our economy. If government is to retain the confidence of the people, it must not spend more than can be justified on grounds of national need or spent with maximum efficiency. And I shall say more on this in a moment.

The final and best means of strengthening demand among consumers and business is to reduce the burden on private income and the deterrents to private initiative which are imposed by our present tax system -- and this administration pledged itself last summer to an across-the-board, top-to-bottom cut in personal and corporate income taxes to be enacted and become effective in 1963.

I'm not talking about a "quickie" or a temporary tax cut, which would be more appropriate if a recession were imminent. Nor am I talking about giving the economy a mere shot in the arm, to ease some temporary complaint. I am talking about the accumulated evidence of the last five years that our present tax system, developed as it was, in good part, during World War II to restrain growth, exerts too heavy a drag on growth in peace time; that it siphons out of the private economy too large a share of personal and business purchasing power; that it reduces the financial incenitives [sic] for personal effort, investment, and risk-taking. In short, to increase demand and lift the economy, the federal government's most useful role is not to rush into a program of excessive increases in public expenditures, but to expand the incentives and opportunities for private expenditures.

#THISisAmericanCommunism

1. Guaranteed Work for Everybody
Unemployment blows. The easiest and most direct solution is for the government to guarantee that everyone who wants to contribute productively to society is able to earn a decent living in the public sector.
...
Imagine a world where people could contribute the skills that inspire them – teaching, tutoring, urban farming, cleaning up the environment, painting murals – rather than telemarketing or whatever other stupid tasks bosses need done to supplement their millions.

2. Social Security for All
What if people didn't have to work to survive? Enter the jaw-droppingly simple idea of a universal basic income, in which the government would just add a sum sufficient for subsistence to everyone's bank account every month.
...
Put another way: A universal basic income, combined with a job guarantee and other social programs, could make participation in the labor force truly voluntary, thereby enabling people to get a life.

3. Take Back The Land
The most mainstream way of flipping the script is a simple land-value tax. By targeting wealthy real estate owners and their free rides, we can fight inequality and poverty directly, make disastrous asset price bubbles impossible and curb Wall Street's hideous bloat. ... In any case, we have to stop letting rich people pretend they privately own what nature provided everyone.

4. Make Everything Owned by Everybody
"Capital stock" refers to two things here: the buildings and equipment that workers use to produce goods and services, and the stocks and bonds that represent ownership over the former. The top 10 percent's ownership of the means of production is represented by the fact that they control 80 percent of all financial assets.

Just buy up their stocks and bonds. When the government does that, it's called a sovereign wealth fund.

5. A Public Bank in Every State
There is only one state that currently has a public option for banking: North Dakota. When North Dakotans pay state taxes, the money gets deposited in the state's bank, which in turn offers cheap loans to farmers, students and businesses. The Bank of North Dakota doesn't make seedy, destined-to-default loans, slice them up inscrutably and sell them on a secondary market. It doesn't play around with incomprehensible derivatives and allow its executives to extract billions of dollars. It just makes loans and works with debtors to pay them off.
